Short-bio of the speaker:
Giorgos (Georgios) Kallis is an environmental scientist working on ecological economics and political ecology. A Marie Curie International Fellow at the Energy and Resources Group of the University of California at Berkeley before coming to Barcelona and working as ICREA research professor at ICTA, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. He also worked as a Leverhulme visiting professor at the department of Development Studies, SOAS, London. Giorgos holds a PhD in Environmental Policy and Planning from the University of the Aegean in Greece, a Masters in Economics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and a Masters in Environmental Engineering and a Bachelors in Chemistry from Imperial College, London. His research area covers from macro-ecological economics, political ecology, climate change, drought and conflicts and so on, forming part of the inter-disciplinary field of environmental studies. He is interested in the political-economic roots of environmental degradation and its uneven distribution along lines of power, income and class. A large number of his articles were published on leading international journal; the main books that he (co)authored or (co)edited include: Integrated Evaluation for Sustainable River Basin Governance (2007); Integrated Deliberative Decision Processes for Water Resources Planning and Evaluation (2007); Degrowth: A Vocabulary for a New Era (2014). He is the coordinator of the Political Ecology course; through an online forum, he endeavors to help young students and junior scholars to improve their academic writing skills.
